Before i start an apology -feeling really down and fed up but need to let of steam and i think my family have had enough Had 2 days off work last week as had sickness bug which is going around -kids had all had it and i'm a sitting target.Daughter came home from school Friday and discovered her beloved hamster Smokey unable to move.Hubby took her straight to the vet where she had to be put to sleep .Myself and daughter very upset,i know it's only a hamster but we loved her very much - she was a real character. I woke up yesterday unable to move - very scary as i've not been this ill for a long time.Hubby panicked and called doctor out who gave me a steroid injection - no real effect,so this morning my GP has ordered me back onto 30 mg of steroid tablets.I'm absolutely gutted as it took me months to get off them last year.I know it's stupid if they help but i can't help it.Darling hubby can't understand although he tries - if it's broken take something and get it fixed is his motto.I'm normally a very positive person but i feel so down tonight. The worse thing is Abi is still very upset and i literally cannot cuddle her and i'm heartbroken. Anyway i'm just putting on my morphine patch and hopefully get some sleep for the first time in 48 hrs . Sorry to go on but i figure you lovely people understand better than most. Take care all Julie xx

Julie, I am so sorry you are going through all this. About you beloved pet. please don't minimise the impact this can have. Some people might not understand but other animal lovers surely will. I was devastated when my cat died and my sons grief was almost too much for me to bear. I also have 6 hens and would be devastated if I were to lose one. So please give yourself a break here as this has been really stressful and will take time for you and your family to get over. Your flare up sounds horrible and everyone on here will sympathise about this. Steroids are a pain but they can also be the start of the road back to some sort of normality so try to think about the end goal and count the days until you can reduce and finally stop them. It sounds as though you have a loving and supportive husband and that you have a lovely close relationship with your daughter. Your family will help you get through this tough time. You have no need to apologise for letting off a bit of steam. we all need to do that sometimes and it has helped me so much to do it in this forum where other people really understand what you're going through. I hope you can get some valuable sleep to help give you the strength that you need right now. Please nurture yourself in every way that you can and allow others to do the same. Sending hugs and best wishes. Keep us posted on how you're feeling. Naomi X

Same here Julie. Your pet is a member of your family and loved as much. It doesn't matter what it is. I am an animal lover and have always been devastated when my pets died. I have had everything from dogs and cats to snakes and rats and they have all meant the world to me. Unfortunately other people don't understand and you are very much alone in your grief but I have to say that the only way to get over it is by getting another one.
Love Sheila x

Hi Julie,
I know how you feel - we have 1 hamster, 3 gerbils, a cat and a dog and they are all characters - the hamster loves our dog! I like to think that our furry creatures go to MouseVille - Have you watched Green Mile with Tom Hanks - well if not an inmate on death row gets attached to a little mouse and when its time for him to leave this earth - the wardens take the mouse and tell the guy that he's going to MouseVille where people can see them and pet them and they have a great time, being loved! Since then all my kids say that any animal we have that passes on goes to MouseVille - even my friends children who are 3 and 5 say their pets go there! In fact my daughter uses it in school to cheer her reception kids up!
As for the RA, it can be hard coming off a drug that you think you no longer need only to go back on it, but you are on it for a reason and a blummin' good reason at that!
Gentle hugs to you and your daughter.
